Based on the work of Cuban poet José Lezama Lima (1910–1976), the film is centered on the poem “Rhapsody for the Mule” (from the book Fixity, 1949), recited in the author’s own voice. The film features excerpts from “The Possible Images” (from Analects of the Clock, 1948), “ Count Cagliostro” (La Habana newspaper, 1950), “Baroque Curiosity” (from The American Expression, 1957), and “Confluences” (from The Enchanted Quality, 1968), with references to Brazil (Aleijadinho, Ouro Preto).
