Seeking to repeat the success of the 1922 "Nanook, the Eskimo", American filmmaker Robert Flaherty chose the Polynesian island of Savai‘i as the setting for his 1923 film "Moana", depicting the local way of life. Fifty years later, Flaherty‘s daughter Monica, who had lived in Savai‘i as a child, returned there to expound upon "Moana" through sounds and music. The sound version was released in Paris in 1981, with the collaboration of filmmakers Jean Renoir and Richard Leacock. In 2014, Monica‘s film was digitally restored by filmmaker Sami van Ingen (Flaherty‘s great grandson) and curator Bruce Posner, with sound remixed by Lee Ditcher.
