Austrian naturalist Johann Natterer came to Brazil in 1817 as a member of the Austrian Expedition, which accompanied the then Archduchess Leopoldina. The eighteen years he spent in the country resulted in an impressive collection of over 50 thousand objects that make up the largest ethnographic collection about Brazilian indigenous peoples, today preserved in two of the most important museums of Vienna.
