In May 2017, filmmaker and journalist Shiori Ito disclosed the fact that she had been raped by the journalist closest to and biographer of then prime minister of Shinzo Abe. In a few days, Ito was dragged to the center of Japanese politics: the right saw her as a threat to Abe‘s government and the left praised her for the same reason. In a society where talking about such issues is considered shameful, death threats and hate mail sent Ito into a downward spiral. After she filed a civil lawsuit, the accused waged an all-out war against her.
