O Futebol
O Futebol
Dir.: Sergio Oksman, 70. Brazil, Spain. 2015
Sergio and his dad Simão have not seen each other for 20 years. The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil offers a pretext for the son, who lives in Spain, to spend some time with his father, reviving their old habit of watching soccer matches together when he was still a little boy. As they begin to bond again, their conversations lead to the past and the unsolved issues caused by the distance. Running in parallel with the World Cup matches, their meetings made it clear that something escaped from the initial plan. This trip can bring not only reconciliation, but also an exploration into uncharted territory.

Ordinary Man
Homem Comum
Dir.: Carlos Nader, 110’. Brazil. 2013
Over almost 20 years, the filmmaker Carlos Nader spent time with a truck driver from the state of Pará, Nilson de Paula, and his family. From the beginning there had been a project of making a documentary, but the intentions viscerally transformed in a process that was also captured on camera. During this period, the lives of Nilson (who falls ill) and his wife, Jane, and their only daughter, Liciane, are transformed, as well as the life of the director, who emotionally becomes a part of this circle as well. Important issues like the meaning of life are a part of the film’s texture itself, interspersed with excerpts from the classic “The Word” (Ordet) by Carl Dreyer, making aesthetic and existential connections evident.

They Killed My Brother
Mataram Meu Irmão
Dir.: Cristiano Burlan, 77’. Brazil. 2013
Reconstructing the details of the death of his brother, Rafael Burlan da Silva, twelve years ago, the filmmaker Cristiano Burlan launches a personal journey that leads to the heart of a cycle of violence in the outskirts of São Paulo — like the neighborhood Capão Redondo, where his family lived and where his 22 year-old brother was killed with 7 shots in 2001. Exploring his brother’s reasons for involvement with drugs and car theft, the director exposes parts of his own family history, listening to relatives and friends, whose testimonies bring to light the fates of several characters, mapping the history of painful emotional wounds.

Welcome Back
Dois Tempos
Dir.: Dir.: Dorrit Harazim e Arthur Fontes, 82’. Brazil. 2010
As indicated by statistics, the rise of the Brazilian middle class is examined in this documentary, in which the directors Dorrit Harazim and Arthur Fontes revisit a family from the east side of São Paulo which was the subject of a previous work, “The Braz Family” (2000). Seu Toninho, Dona Maria and three of their four children, Denise, Gisele and Éder - the oldest, Anderson, married and moved out - still live in the same house in Vila Brasilândia. But their income and professional and cultural outlooks have visibly expanded. Denise, who was a receptionist, now works in sales, has a credit card, has done plastic surgery and has been on a plane. Gisele studies pedagogy and has a laptop. Éder gave up being a motorcycle messenger and became a laboratory technician. Anderson works with insurance and plans a trip abroad.
