In Humberstone, Chile, remnants of the landscape and memories of survivors can scarcely illustrate the prosperity of the time when much of the saltpeter produced locally was exported to the whole world. In the vicinity of the former town of Fordlândia in the state of Pará, Brazil, its squatter-occupied homes are the last signs of an American city built by Henry Ford at the height of the rubber cycle in that region. The population of Armero in Colombia was virtually wiped out by the eruption of the volcano Nevado del Ruiz in 1985. Twenty-five years after it was flooded following a dam break, ruins of Villa Epecuén in Argentina surfaced to expose remains of what was once a lively hot springs resort town.
