When six years ago Rudolf Elmer, the auditor of the Swiss bank Julius Baer, decided to disclose data on thousands of customers and corporations holding accounts in the Cayman Islands, the veil that masked the underlying widespread tax evasion began to fall. While the hitherto all-pervasive secrecy of the Swiss banking system suffers one of its greatest setbacks, Elmer sees his reputation demolished and a series of lawsuits are brought against him, a heavy price to pay for going from insider to critic.
