Mexican filmmaker Juan Francisco Urrusti recovers the memory of his family as survivors of the Spanish Civil War who took refuge in Mexico in 1939. His parents, an aunt and his four grandparents traveled on a cargo ship, the Sinaia, and like thousands of other Spanish exiles they were warmly welcomed at a time when Mexico was governed by the leftist president Lázaro Cárdenas. By recording interviews with his relatives and using archival footage, the director retraces his family‘s journey whereby his ancestors had to reinvent themselves in the face of their tragedy. The film also explores the context of their own personal destiny within the broader framework of that period in history.
