Winner of the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2016, the documentary focuses on the refugee crisis in Europe, specifically in Lampedusa (Sicily). The bucolic fisherman’s island became an outpost in the biggest humanitarian crisis in Europe since the end of the World War II, having received thousands of immigrants coming from Africa and the Middle East on precarious boats. In addition to several rescues carried out by the Italian Coast Guard, the film shows the routine of the locals, such as the boy Samuele, a fisherman’s son, and the Pietro Bartolo, the only doctor in the island, who lost count of how many autopsies he conducted since the first refugee boats arrived there in 1991.
