Built during the Soviet period in 1963 and operating since 1978, the Sayano Shushenskaya Dam, in Siberia, is one of the largest in the world. In August 2009 a disaster of major proportions took place, when one of its turbines exploded, damaging or totally destructing other ten turbines, besides the death of 75 people and environmental damage due to the oil spilled in the river Yenisei. It took five years of repairing and 40 billion rubles to restore it, and the causes of the accident were not fully clarified.
