Considered to be “Africa’s last colony”, the Western Sahara is home to one of the most longstanding and least known conflicts in the world. After the departure of the Spanish colonizers, in 1974, instead of a promised plebiscite to decide on the self-determination of the Sahawari Bedouins, Spain handed the territory to Morocco and Mauritania (who retreated in 1979), provoking an everlasting war and the Sahawari population’s diaspora.
